Bio – ing. Paul van Lerberghe MSc. - Doctoral Candidate

Paul van Lerberghe a Belgian academic, author, risk manager, crime prevention practitioner and adviser with over 30 years’ international experience in Physical Security and Risk management. He holds a Master of Science degree in industrial engineering electric/electronics (University of Antwerp) and is a ‘doctoral candidate’ at the university of Gent, where he does research on the topic of Security Awareness.

He further specialised in security (courses about security such as the training modules required according the Belgium law on Private Security (WPV)), internal audit, communication, software engineering, programming, pedagogy and risk management. To have expertise in Video understanding (VU), Paul followed a specialization in the field of Video Content Analysis (VCA) and Video understanding (VU) with professor Dr. François Bremond (Research Director at INRIA Sophia Antipolis University of Nice-France). Paul uses his knowledge, on risk management, in the field of security engineering, education and monitoring & evaluation. His clients are Governments, police, public transport, ports, airports, energy organizations, nuclear energy, oil and gas sector, organizations from the pharmaceutical and organic sector and museums.

Paul's risk management knowledge includes the development and revision of security engineering techniques and measures summarized in a functional design of security controls. He is also an experienced trainer within these domains and a certified trainer in the ISO31000 Risk Management Standard and IEC/ISO31010 risk assessment techniques. As an expert in the area of security-evaluation in organizations and critical infrastructure within the domain of security risks, management, maturity and technology effectiveness.

For this he uses a security path analysis (PA). PA will calculate the probability that an offender is caught and its measures the effectiveness of security measures in function of the different threat scenarios. He is also regular (co-) author of security and risk management articles and speaker.

He was a founding Partner of Radar-Risk and worked in Radar’s Belgian office as the CTO and the company’s security officer for Nato.

He started his career in 1985 and worked for various security companies like Alphatronics, Get, ENI (now Engie), Bell Telephone (now Alcatel), Securitas Systems (part of Securitas) and Optimit.

Paul practices risk management in the areas of security engineering, education and monitoring & review. His clients include governments, police, public transportation, energy organizations from the electricity, nuclear, oil and gas sector, organizations from the pharmaceutical and biologicals sector and fine arts institutes.

Paul’s risk management practice involves the development and review of security engineering techniques such as ‘Typical Security Design (TSD), and security auditing. He also is an experienced trainer in these domains and a certified trainer in the ISO31000 Risk Management Standard and a trainer in IEC/ISO31010 Risk Assessment techniques. Paul is skilled in evaluating organizations in the domain of security risk management maturity and technology effectiveness. Paul is an experienced professional in security path analysis, analysing the probability of interruption for a possible array of adversaries trying to attack critical targets using an array of modi operandi. He is a regular of author of risk management articles and a regular speaker on various risk management subjects.

He is beside ‘doctoral candidate’ also visiting Professor at the University of Antwerp within the Faculty of Law, Department Safety Engineering for the component Security technology. At the UAntwerpen he also acts as co-promoter for the students who make a master's thesis within this field. He was also a lecturer at the VIVES-College for the department ‘Maatschappelijke veiligheid’.
